2004 Major League Baseball MLB All Star game marked the 75th time the “Midsummer Classic” was played. It was decreed by Commissioner Bud Selig that the winner of the game would decide home field advantage for the World Series. The adjustment to the game sent shock waves throughout the baseball world. Some liked the idea since players seemed to not be trying as hard as they used to in the old days and some didn’t like it because they didn’t like the idea that a guy playing for the Tampa Bay Rays could have a real bearing on the World Series. The National League leads the all time series 40-32 but the American League has won the last six.
2003’s game was everything it was built up to be by the MLB hype machine. The National league had a two run lead in the bottom of the 8 th when they brought in the man who hadn’t blown a save since August of 2002, Eric Gagne. The AL’s Vernon Wells hit a RBI double that scored Melvin Mora. Next up was pinch hitter Hank Blalock and he dominated a 3-1 Gagne fastball 427 feet into the left-center stands. The NL got one last chance and AL pitcher Keith Foulke closed out the game.
