The Rockets have played professional basketball in the city of Houston for more than 30 years and have won two championships in that time while making 21 playoff appearances. Those two teams were coached by Rudy Tomjanovich. Those teams were something Houston will never forget. They had the right mixture of characters and superstars on those two teams. The first time around in 1994, the team was built soley around uber-center Hakeem Olajuwon. They also had great role players around him like Kenny "The Jet" Smith, Mario Elie, Robert Horry and Vernon Maxwell. In 1995, the Rockets picked up Hall of Fame guard Clyde Drexler. Drexler took on a pretty prominent role that season as he scored over 21 points a game on their way to their second championship of a Back-to-Back.
These days Jeff Van Gundy is at the helm of the Rockets. Van Gundy has always been know to bring an ugly style of basketball that features lots of defensive emphasis and picking your shots.
On the court the team is led by another amazing guard-center combo. Shooting guard Tracy McGrady provides the flashes of brilliance and athleticism on the perimeter and center Yao Ming contributes the brute strength and interior presence that is needed on a championship caliber team. At one point, the two players seemed to have trouble playing with each other, but now they have developed quite the chemistry and can put points up on the scoreboard in a hurry.
