It’s true; the Bengals did have some amazing glory days. Even if those glory days took place way back in the 1980s, they’re just as glorious as recent good days. Back in 1988 the Bengals were the talk of the league. They finished the season with a 12-4 record, won the AFC Central and had the most prolific offense the city of Cincinnati had ever seen. That offense was downright scary, and it should have been. They had All-Pros like quarterback Boomer Esiason, running backs James Brooks and Ickey Woods (who did the Ickey shuffle, one of the greatest endzone dances ever), wide receiver Eddie Brown, and Hall of Fame tackle Anthony Munoz. They scored more points and gained more yards than anyone else in the league on their way to their third Super Bowl appearance. There they met up with one of the greatest dynasties in sports history, the Joe Montana-led San Francisco 49ers. In one of the more entertaining Super Bowls to date, the Bengals fell to Montana and his crew, when they went 92 yards and scored the final touchdown with 34 seconds left. 49ers win 20-16.
These days the team is being molded into the winning image that head coach Marvin Lewis has for them. The franchise player is without a doubt quarterback Carson Palmer. The former USC and Heisman Trophy winning signal caller is one of the up and coming stars in the NFL. The offense is also anchored by All-Pro wide receiver Chad Johnson. Johnson has quickly become one of the best known players in the league due to his ability to be outspoken.
