Atlanta has made a number of playoff appearances and won the NFC West championship only a handful of times. One of the best runs in the playoffs the franchise has put on was in 1999. Head coach at the time, Dan Reeves, led to the team to Super Bowl XXXIII. There they faced off against John Elway, Terrell Davis and the Denver Broncos in Miami. The Falcons named themselves the “Dirty Birds” and even came up with an endzone dance for it. The ring leader of all of this was All-Pro Jamal Anderson. The team also had Chris Chandler under center and Tony Martin as their number one wideout. The defense was stacked with big time names also. Guys like linebackers Cornelius Bennett, Jessie Tuggle, cornerback Ray Buchanan, and Eugene Robinson. The defense was one of the main reasons of their success. In the game, the Falcons drove past the Bronco’s 30 yard line seven times, but only got 13 points out of it. They went on to lose 34-19, due large in part to their lack of offense in the red zone, in Elway’s final hurrah on the football field.
These days the Falcons don’t fly quite as much anymore. They’ve actually got one of the best running attacks the league has seen in quite a while. With quarterback Michael Vick, who can throw up a 100-yard rushing game almost at will, and running back Warrick Dunn in the backfield they can run all over anyone. The team is led by young, fiery head coach Jim Mora Jr. With Mora Jr. there, the Falcons should be contesting for NFC West Championships for a while.
