Jacksonville’s first year (1995), as expected, was rough, but they bounced back to make the playoffs four years in a row, the last two as AFC Central champions. The next three seasons saw the team finish 10 games under .500 marking the end of the Tom Coughlin era where the team went 68-60 over 8 years. Ownership wanted to go in another direction and decided to ink young defensive guru Jack Del Rio. Del Rio had just gotten done turning the Carolina Panthers D from 31st to 2nd in the league. In the years before that, he was the linebackers coach for the Super Bowl XXXV Champion Baltimore Ravens who were known for their amazing linebacker play that year. Some have called that defense the best that has ever played; even better than the ’85 Chicago Bears.
In 2003, Byron Leftwich established himself as the quarterback of the future for the Jacksonville Jaguars after a lengthy battle with Mark Brunell. In the end, the Jaguars decided to look towards the future and keep the younger Leftwich while Brunell signed with the Washington Redskins. At running back, Fred Taylor is one of the best backs in the league if he can avoid injuries. That’s a big if, since they have plagued him over the course of his young career in a number of different ways.
