Oakland started their existence in the AFL and joined the NFL with many other teams before the 1970 season. After the 1981 season, the team packed up and moved down the road to Los Angeles. Then, 13 years later, owner Al Davis had the Raiders move back to Oakland. Davis is undoubtedly the face of the organization. The Raiders were one of the most progressive franchises in the league. In the olden days, they were one of the few teams that scouted and drafted players from southern schools that were predominatly black and a lot of this is credited to Davis. He was the first owner to hire minorities as their head coach when he brought in Tom Flores and, later, Art Shell. He’s one of a few owners that will get just as much media coverage as the team, but in recent years it seems that he has been the one that has brought the organization down. In spite of this, he does his best to put the most talented players on the field and that’s all a fan base can ask of its owner.
These days, the team is in somewhat of a tailspin. Davis brought back Art Shell, who hadn’t coached since he left the Raiders in 1994, to restore some of the tradition of the franchise. He will have a few bullets in his gun with his wide receiver Randy Moss and running back LaMont Jordan.
