In 2000, it was the year of the Raven. The Baltimore franchise that was moved out of Cleveland by Art Modell, found themselves in a tight spot in Week 9. They opened up the season with a 5-1 record and then they lost the next three games. The team was all over the place and that’s when Head Coach Brian Billick made the decision to start Trent Dilfer at quarterback instead of Tony Banks. The Ravens then went on to ride a 10 game winning streak into the Super Bowl. There they faced the NFC’s New York Giants. The defense crushed them and forced Giants quarterback Kerry Collins into throwing four interceptions on their way to a 34-7 victory. Middle linebacker and the anchor of the defense, Ray Lewis, was named MVP of the game.
One of the reasons why the Ravens have been great is because of Billick, who has the ability to devise a game plan that almost always neutralizes the opposition’s best player. Billick was a coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings before taking over in Baltimore before the 1999 season, and in the 2000 season, he led the Ravens to their first ever Super Bowl victory.
The team is undoubtedly known for their play on the defensive side of the ball led by middle linebacker Ray Lewis. Terrell Suggs made a successful transition to the professional game, and Ed Reed, will keep the defensive legacy going long after Lewis is gone.
