The Tennessee Titans began their history as the Houston Oilers in the AFL. They joined the NFL prior to the 1970 season and continued played in Houston thru the 1996 season. After the season was over, the team moved to Tennessee. Two years later, they officially changed their name to the Tennessee Titans and have kept the name ever since.
The franchise’s biggest moment occurred in the 1999 playoffs when they were taking on the Buffalo Bills. The Bills kicker Steve Christie booted a 51-yard field goal to put his team up 16-15 with 16 seconds left on the clock. On the next kickoff, the Bills squib kicked it and Wycheck took the kick and ran towards the right sideline. He then threw the ball laterally to Kevin Dyson who caught it and ran 70 yards for the game-winning touchdown. There were a few seconds left still on the clock, but the Bills couldn’t pull off their own return. The play would be named “Music City Miracle.”
That play propelled the Titans to the Super Bowl where they met the “Greatest Show on Turf” the St. Louis Rams. Trailing late, McNair led the team inside the Rams 10-yard line, and on the last play of the game, McNair again completed a pass to Dyson who came up inches short of scoring the winning touchdown.
These days the Titans aren’t exactly challenging for the Lombardi Trophy. Head Coach Jeff Fisher has been with the team since 1994 and is looking to bring them back to respectability in the league.
