The good fortunes of the San Antonio Spurs can be traced back to the 1988 draft lottery when they somehow managed to win the rights to the #1 pick and took center David Robinson from the US Naval Academy. The team did quite well for itself in the Midwestern Division in the Western Conference but routinely stumble in the playoffs. The most epic of these came in 1995, when Robinson won the MVP award, but got out played by Houston's center Hakeem Olajuwon in the Western Conference Finals. The Spurs lost that series in six games. Robinson then injured himself during the 1997 season and the team lost a franchise record 62 games.
The team was hoping they could hit the jackpot again by receiving the #1 pick in the 1998 draft. They did and selected Tim Duncan from Wake Forest. The "twin towers" of Duncan and Robinson won the team their first championship in 1999 and a second in 2003, a season that would prove to be Robinson's farewell. Duncan added in a third championship that he could call his own in 2005.
Duncan is the superstar, known as "the big fundamental", and best known for the bank shot that he's made famous. Point guard Tony Parker has shown he can maintain himself over an entire season and into the playoffs. He has proven himself to be one of the best in the league. Off-guard Manu Ginobili is the guy the team looks for to add energy and a little bit of flair. With these three amigos patrolling the courts of San Antonio they will be tough to take down.
