It seems America’s Team lost their key position in the NFC East after a pretty difficult December, disappointing season ticket holders to Texas Stadium by losing 3 of their 4 final games, and ending behind Philadelphia. They have beefed up their offensive line, giving Arizona’s Leonard Davis a cool 49 million contract to play right guard. The defensive line was considered underachieving last season, with the ends not able to make a lot of plays, and will place more pressure on the QB in upcoming plays. While the 2007 Cowboys still have a weak offensive line and may lack consistency, ticket holders and fans can be assured that they support a playoff team that is tied with the Steelers and 49ers for most Super bowl wins.
The Dallas Cowboys have one of the longer tradtions of winning in the National Football League. They earned the nickname of “America’s Team” in the late 1960s while they were challenging for the Super Bowl seemingly every year. The team first played in 1960 under head coach Tom Landry who would coach the team through 1988, winning two Super Bowls in the process. These teams had it all. They had a punishing defense, a great offense that was led by Hall of Famers like quarterback Roger Staubach and running back Tony Dorsett.
The Landry era was pretty good, but some will argue that the Jerry Jones era has been better. The first thing Jones did was get rid of Landry and bring in his former college football teammate at the University of Arkansas. Johnson became would lead the team to another two championships. During that span the team dominated with “The Triplets” quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Emmitt Smith and wide receiver Michael Irvin. The three Hall of Famers were the glue that held them together through everything. Smith would end up capturing the NFL’s most hallowed record, the career rushing yards mark. It was a special day in Texas Stadium when Emmitt passed up Walter Payton on this list to go down in history.
