Mercedes-Benz Superdome New Orleans, LA
The first Super Bowl was played on January 15, 1967 in Los Angeles’ Memorial Coliseum. Bart Starr and Max McGee led the Green Bay Packers to a 35-10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs for legendary coach Vince Lombardi, for whom the Super Bowl trophy now bears its name. Super Bowl II was played in Miami and the Packers won 33-14 over the Oakland Raiders. Super Bowl III saw Jets QB Joe Namath guarantee a win for his team over the Baltimore Colts, who were a three touchdown favorite in the game. Namath proved a prophet as the Jets shocked the world by winning 16-7. In Super Bowl IV, the Chiefs were 13 point underdogs to the Minnesota Vikings but the Chiefs won 23-7 behind QB Len Dawson. Super Bowl V saw Baltimore rebound from their SB III loss to beat the Dallas Cowboys 16-13. The Pittsburgh Steelers, the team of the 70s, won four Super Bowls in the decade (IX, X, XIII, XIV). The San Francisco 49ers won four Super Bowls in the 1980s (XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV) and another in Super Bowl XXIX held in 1995. The 49ers also have the honor of scoring the most points in a Super Bowl game when they beat Denver 55-10 in SB XXIV.
The Dallas Cowboys have also won five Super Bowls (VI, XII, XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX). Super Bowl XXV was one of the most memorable games in NFL history. The New York Giants, led by Coach Bill Parcells and QB Phil Simms, had a 20-19 lead when the Buffalo Bills started a late game-winning drive. The Bills got in position but kicker Scott Norwood missed the kick wide. The Bills would go on to represent the AFC in the next three Super Bowls as well but lost each game.
The Super Bowl, usually played in late January, has been played in February in 2003 and 2004s, with the New England Patriots winning each of the games. Each of their wins was a three point victory with kicker Adam Vinatieri kicking the game winner as time expired.
